There is no proof of course, and few aspies commit murder, but some of his traits seem uncomfortably close to home. Of course, from the instant it happened, commentators have been blithely proclaiming that the shooter is mentally ill, which is itself a slur upon the mentally ill. I believe that when media persons offer the, as yet unfounded opinion, that a criminal “must be” autistic or mentally ill, what they are really saying “He cannot be one of us. Us healthy neurotypical types would never do anything so evil as slaughter innocent civilians.” Yeah, right. Just ask the folks in Hiroshima, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.The commentators are just trying to convince us that the shooter must be “different,” not like us, so they do not have to deal with the dark side of human nature. What this young man did was just plain evil, and it was evil whether he is an aspie, dealing with a mental illness or a perfectly normal NT.Unless he is truly insane, and doesn’t know right from wrong, and there I no evidence of that, he is responsible for his own evildoing, as we all are.

at my age, most of the air has been let out of my outrage, and i worry what it turns into once deflated.
i really, truly, don’t mind being different. it’s the way i’m treated that bothers me, and if nothing else, i’m glad i can still make that distinction.
your ‘voice’ about these sorts of topics, as ever, is valuable in its clarity.

(but i think the reCaptcha below has been designed to drive me insane. why has every reCaptcha i’ve had to fil out the last two weeks been unreadable?? :-)
